If you've ever felt like your brain is a web browser with 50 tabs open at once, all playing different videos, you'll know the daily battle of living with ADHD. But it's not just an ADHD thing — that feeling of been scattered, overwhelmed, and completely out of motivational fuel is a hallmark of burnout, anxiety or just navigating a rough patch in life.
We're told to make lists, use planners, try mindfulness, or even medication, but for many, a powerful tool might be lurking in a place you'd least expect: a high-energy, sweat-drenched F45 studio.
The core principals of F45 Training align surprisingly well with the needs of an overwhelmed mind, particularly when it comes to tackling the dopamine deficit that underpins so much of the struggle.
Brain Fog, The Dopamine Drought and the HIIT Flood
At it's heart, struggles with focus and motivation are often linked to dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a massive role in our brain's reward system. When you're stressed, burned out, or have a condition like ADHD, this system can be less effective, which is why 'boring' or low-stimulation tasks can feel like genuine torture.
This is where high-intensity interval training (HIIT), the engine of every F45 workout, comes in to play.
Intense, heart-pumping exercise is one of the most effective ways to trigger a significant release of dopamine, and other feel-good brain chemicals like endorphins and serotonin.
It's much like bringing home a puppy. You leave it under-stimulated or bored for an hour, and you'll come back to a torn up couch and all of your left socks chewed up. But give that puppy a solid burst of exercise, and suddenly it's calm, alert and able to learn.
An ADHD brain works much the same way. Without enough stimulation, they drift, fidget, or get destructive, but with the right kind of activity, they settle, focus and perform.
For anyone feeling flat, an F45 session can act like a reset button. That pre-workout feeling of being scattered and unmotivated can be replaced by a post-workout clarity and a sense of accomplishment. It's a genuine chemical boot that helps to level the playing field, making it easier to focus, and feel motivated for hours afterwards.

Taming the Chaos: Why the F45 Structure is Gold
Beyond the brain chemistry, it's the very structure of an F45 Class that makes it so effective for those wrestling with a chaotic mind. Here's why:
Decision-Making is Done for You
One of the biggest hurdles when you're overwhelmed is "task initiation"
—the simple act of starting. Deciding what workout to do, which exercises, and for how long can be so exhausting that it's easier to just... not.
At F45, all the thinking is removed. You rock up, and for 45 minutes, the screens and trainers tell you exactly what to do. It completely bypasses the executive
function traffic jam.
Constant Novelty Kills Boredom, but we also need to feel capable!
Monotony is the enemy of an under-stimulated or fatigued brain. F45 is the antidote. The workouts are different every single day. Even within a session, you’re only at each station for a matter of seconds. Before your brain has a chance to wander or get bored, the buzzer goes off and you're on to the next thing.
The sessions are different but not too different at the point you feel that uncertainty is too much.
You still keep a feeling of familiarity to the exercises so you don’t feel that task initiation paralysis. Additionally, we can see the trainers demonstrating the movements beforehand, and we have our amazing screens where we can check how the exercise needs to be done.
No Mirrors, No Distractions
Ever walked into a gym and felt instantly self-conscious? Traditional gyms are full of mirrors, which can be a huge source of distraction and negative self-talk. F45 studios are intentionally designed without mirrors. This removes the pressure to look a certain way and shifts the focus from what your body looks like to what your body can do. For a brain prone to distraction or a person battling feelings of rejection or low self-esteem, this is a game-changer. You’re there to move and feel good, not to scrutinise yourself.
More Than a Workout: Community and "Body Doubling"
A powerful feature of the F45 method is the community. This taps into a powerful strategy known as "body doubling".
This is the phenomenon where people find it easier to concentrate on and complete tasks when someone else is simply in the same room. It provides a subtle, external stimulus that helps the brain stay on track.
An F45 class is essentially a group body doubling in overdrive. You're all in it together, tackling the same challenge. This shared energy and light-touch accountability from trainers and fellow members can be the difference between staying on the couch and chucking on your trainers. The high-fives and words of encouragement provide that immediate positive reinforcement that the dopamine-seeking brain thrives on.

Not Just for ADHD: A Lifeline for Burnout and Tough Times
While F45 is a fantastic match for the ADHD brain, its benefits are universal for anyone feeling mentally fried. The symptoms of burnout, anxiety, and depression—like brain fog, decision fatigue, low motivation, and social withdrawal—are remarkably similar to the daily challenges of
ADHD.
Feeling Burned Out? The pre-planned workouts eliminate mental load, while the dopamine boost helps fight fatigue and apathy.
Going Through a Rough Patch? The community provides a sense of belonging and fights the isolation that often comes with tough times. It's a guaranteed positive social interaction.
Feeling Anxious? A high-intensity session is a brilliant outlet for nervous energy,
leaving you feeling calmer and more grounded.

Who says you cannot start your session and leave earlier? We think motivation needs to be present for us to start a physical or mental activity. Guess what! Many times it is the other way around!
After 5 minutes in a session we can check with ourselves how we are feeling. We might decide to give it a go for another 5 minutes and that’s it. 10 minutes of working out is better than 0 minutes! On other occasions, we might feel that rush of dopamine and serotonin is starting so we decide to stay. The goal for low energy days can be exactly that: “I will give it a go for 10 minutes and see how I feel”
The Verdict
It’s crucial to be clear: F45 is not a medical treatment or a replacement for professional help.
However, as a complementary tool in an overall mental wellness strategy, such as working with a Counsellor or Psychotherapist, developing a healthy sleep routine, and building a routine that works for you, the benefits of a structured HIIT class for busy professionals or individuals juggling a heavy load hard to ignore.
It provides a potent, natural mood boost, removes the mental load of planning, keeps the brain engaged, and offers a structured, supportive environment free from judgment.
So, if you’re looking to cut through the brain fog and find a sustainable source of
motivation — whether it's from ADHD, burnout, or just life — giving an F45 class a go might be one of the best things you can do.
You might just find that sweating it out for 5, 10, 15 or 45 minutes is the life hack your brain has been crying out for.
