Shame Therapy
in Sydney and Online Australia Wide
Shame can be difficult to recognise because it rarely announces itself as shame. More often, it sits beneath the way we think about ourselves — the pressure to be better, fear of being judged or rejected, difficulty accepting our own imperfections, or a persistent sense that we somehow don't quite measure up.
Unlike guilt, which often relates to something we believe we've done, shame can become entangled with who we believe we are. Over time, that distinction can shape our self-worth, relationships and the standards we hold ourselves to.
At Syné Collective, therapy offers a private, non-judgmental space to understand where those beliefs came from, how they're influencing your life now, and whether they still deserve the power they hold.

How can Shame Therapy help?
Understanding the pattern
Reframe
What could feel different?
Begin separating your worth from your mistakes, achievements or other people's approval, and develop a more compassionate and realistic relationship with yourself.
Recognise
How is it showing up now?
Notice the patterns shame may be driving today, from harsh self-criticism and overthinking to difficulty setting boundaries, hiding parts of yourself or constantly seeking approval.
Understand
Where did this come from?
Explore the experiences, relationships and messages that shaped the way you see yourself — including perfectionism, people-pleasing, attachment patterns and fear of rejection.
Where does Shame come from?

Shame cannot always be pointed towards one major life event. It can be developed gradually, through the experiences and relationships that teach us what is acceptable, loveable, or 'good'.
It might be connected to:
-
Childhood criticism or emotional neglect
-
Family dynamics and expectations
-
Bullying, rejection or exclusion
-
Trauma or difficult experiences
-
Relationships where you felt judged
-
Messages about your body or appearance
-
Gender, sexuality or identity
-
Cultural or social expectations
-
Mistakes or experiences from your past
-
Feeling misunderstood or different
-
Lack of belonging
"Did I say the wrong thing? Should I have done more?"
Replaying conversations, second-guessing yourself, worrying about how you've been perceived, and judging yourself more harshly than you would someone else.
Overthinking
Hiding & Fear
"What if people really knew me?"
Keeping parts of your identity, experiences, relationships, sexuality or emotions hidden because being fully seen can feel like risking judgment, rejection or disconnection.
People-Pleasing
"If everyone is happy with me, I'm safe."
Prioritising other people's needs, avoiding conflict, struggling to say no, or feeling responsible for how other people feel.
Perfectionism
"If I get everything right, maybe I'll finally feel good enough."
Holding yourself to impossible standards, tying your worth to achievement or productivity, and finding mistakes or failure disproportionately difficult.
Patterns, or Personality?
Shame doesn't always look like shame.

You Don't Have to Tell Us Everything
Shame can make the things we most need to talk about feel the hardest to say out loud. Therapy doesn't require you to arrive ready to share your whole story, understand where your feelings came from, or decide whether your experiences were “bad enough” to matter. We can start with what you're noticing now and work from there, at your pace.
